How to reduce fear of water forever and become a competent swimmer...
Number one, right up front is to conquer your fear before trying to learn to swim.
We have very limited space in our short term (working) memory, there are only so many things we can think about at any given time.
You've experienced this phenomenon if you have ever worried about something big in your life, such as a sick loved one, a job interview or perhaps a work task that you didn't feel competent in carrying out.
Remember how you couldn't get it out of your mind, you just couldn't think about anything else, no matter how hard you tried. Your working memory was overloaded and just couldn't cope (or focus) on any more than your immediate concerns.
Well this is what happens if you are frightened of water, there simply isn't the thinking power available to concentrate on learning the skills of swimming if your brain is busy worrying about drowning!
